Maurice W. Wygal Obituary (1919 - 2013)

Maurice W. Wygal, 93, of Hillsboro died Monday, April 29, 2013 in Hillsboro Rehab Health Care Center. He was born November 18, 1919 in Lewistown, Montana, the son of Admiral Dewey Alice Ordella "Del" (Frailey) Wygal. He was President of his graduating class at Hillsboro High School Class of 1938. Maurice enlisted in U. S. Marine Corps in January 1942 and was discharged as Sergeant in January 1946. He served in the 1st Marine Amphibious Corp and the 3rd and 5th Amphibious Corp from December 1942 to September 1945. All of this time was spent in the Pacific Theater. He was called back to the Corps December 7, 1950 and served in the Marine Aircraft Group II until his honorable discharge in December 1951 as Staff Sergeant. He went on the Honor Flight in June 2010 with his daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Chuck Menzer. Maurice retired in 1984 after nearly 45 years employed as a furnace operator at Eagle Picher-Sherwin Williams in Hillsboro. He had served as secretary of Local 4259 United Steel Workers of America for 30 years. He was one of the founding members of what is now known as the Hillsboro Little League and Hillsboro Pony League. He was an avid fisherman, Cardinal fan and story teller. He was a member of First Christian Church, Hillsboro, and most recently attended Hillsboro Free Methodist Church, and was a Lifetime Member of Moose Lodge #1377, Hillsboro. Maurice was united in marriage with Evelyn Louise Hawker of Pana on June 8, 1946 in Pana. She died April 15, 1987. He married Velma Micenheimer Kayluck on October 31, 1988 in Blytheville, Arkansas and she survives in Pana. He is survived by his daughter: Gloria Menzer husband Charles, Sherrard, IL; 5 grandchildren: Bradley Mazenko fianc Melody Causer of Nokomis, IL; Melanie Mazenko Rubemeyer husband Craig, Davenport, IA; Chris Wygal wife Stacey, Litchfield, IL, Chad Wygal, Hillsboro, IL Zach Wygal, Hillsboro, IL, Dana Holshouser husband Tyson of Hillsboro, IL, Renee Laughlin husband Trent, Walshville, IL; 3 step granddaughters: Trista Menzer Foster husband Nick, Tagen Menzer Tipton husband Sean and Taryn Menzer Claver all from the Quad Cities; 9 great grandchildren: Braden Caleb Mazenko, Litchfield, IL, Dustin, Olivia and Mariska Rubemeyer, Davenport, IA, Caden Colby Wygal, Litchfield, IL, Brayden Laughlin, Walshville, IL Hazel Holshouser, Hillsboro, IL; 3 step great grandchildren: Audrey Foster, Andon Tipton and Skyler Tipton all of the Quad Cities and by his daughters-in-law: Deborah Wygal and Kim Wygal both of Hillsboro. He was also preceded in death by his mother in 1985, father in 1988, son Ronald Wygal on March 24, 2006, brother Fred Wygal in 1986, and sister Mary Kay in infancy. Funeral Information Funeral services will be Friday, May 3, 2013 in Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Randy Sands officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Hillsboro with graveside military rites by VFW Post #1306, Hillsboro and American Legion Post #425, Hillsboro. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
