Maud J. "Maude" Horsthemke Obituary (1914 - 2013)

Maud J. "Maude" (McGrath) Horsthemke, 99, of Pana died Saturday, July 27, 2013 in Shelbyville Manor, Shelbyville, Illinois. She was born January 21, 1914 on a farm outside of Millersville, Illinois to Joseph Newton and Charity Ann (Smith) McGrath. Maud had 4 siblings, Lloyd McGrath, Joe McGrath, Fern Peek and Mae Bantner. All siblings are deceased as well as her parents. Maud attended her elementary years of schooling in a country school called Parkinson Elementary and then two years of high school in Pana, Illinois. On June 20, 1931 in Hillsboro, IL, at the age of 18, Maud became the bride of William Henry Horsthemke, who died April 5, 1994. Maud and Bill were blessed with three children, their first child was a daughter names Lois "Joann". Joann married Charles Kirschner and they blessed Maud and Bill with 5 grandchildren. The Kirschners all live in California. The next child was a girl named Shirley June who married Bill Steck and blessed Bill and Maud with 4 grandsons. Two of these grandsons are deceased as well as Shirley and Bill. Maud and Bill's third child was a son named Robert William who had two children. Robert married Marie Schmitz who had 4 daughters so Bill and Maud were blessed with 6 grandchildren from that union. Robert and Marie live in Pana. She was also blessed with 23 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Maud moved to Parkway apartments in 1994 when Bill passed away. She served as president of Parkway for four years, vice president for four years and entertainment chairman for four years. She was very active in the Pana Area Senior Citizens Center serving as vice president for three years. Maud was also active in Pana Senior Citizens Kitchen Band and her church, United In Faith Church (formerly known as United Church of Christ) where she served as president of the Ladies Guild for six years. Maud lived a very productive and happy life. Funeral Information Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in United In Faith Church, Pana at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Marilyn Rauch officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Pana. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
