John W. Allen Obituary (1940 - 2018)

On Thursday, June 14, 2018, we said goodbye to our father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor John W. Allen. John was born on February 1, 1940 in Springfield, IL to the late Della Mae (Laws) Allen and John G. Allen. On August 3, 1958 he would marry Peggy Ann Stine. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Peggy Ann Allen, he is survived by children: John W. Allen, Jr. (Lisa), Jody L. Giesler, Daniel R. Allen, Michelle L. Gatons (Mark), 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Barbara McClelland and step brother, George Allen. John was a graduate of Lanphier High School in Springfield. He joined the Operating Engineers Local 965 on July 27, 1962. John and Peggy would relocate to Cold Springs Township in 1966. In October 1971, he would purchase his first farm, beginning his love of farming. His driven personality and sacrifices would allow him to acquire Allen Farms Inc. In addition to farming and heavy equipment operating, he enjoyed bowling. He retired from Operating Engineers due to health issues in 1997, but he never lost his love for operating equipment. In his children, he instilled hard work ethics. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. Cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment services will be held at a later date.
