Charles A. "Gaty" Gatewood Sr. Obituary (1925 - 2011)

Charles A. "Gaty" Gatewood, Sr., 85, of Rosamond, died Monday, March 7, 2011 in Heritage Manor-Pana. He was born April 2, 1925 in Brownstown, IL, the son of Arvey Alice Johnson Gatewood. Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at Sloan Implement for 25 years. He had also worked for Dameron Kuhle Implement in Taylorville, various construction businesses, and for the last 30 years he was a truck driver. Charles loved working on anything mechanical, as well as spending time with his grandchildren, and he especially enjoyed his great grandchildren. He was a 50 year member of the Moweaqua Masonic Lodge #180, Ansar Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Springfield, and Moweaqua Eastern Star. Charles married Nora Chumley, and she preceded him in death in 1979. He is survived by his son: Charles "Zandy" Gatewood, Jr. wife Beverly, Rosamond, IL; 2 granddaughters: Crystal Maton husband John, Pana, IL and Nealy Hicks husband John, Mattoon, IL; 2 grandsons: Herman Porter wife Helen, Assumption, IL and Herbert "Jack" Porter, Argenta, IL, who were a big part of his life and thought of them as his sons; 4 great grandchildren: Sydney Zackary Maton and Drake Amelia Hicks; brothers sisters: Jesse Gatewood, Cameron, AR; June Faris, Phoenix, AZ; and Lou Edwards, Edinburg, IL; and several nieces nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 4 brothers; 3 sisters. Funeral Information Cremation rights were accorded. Graveside Masonic services will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in Assumption Cemetery by Moweaqua Masonic Lodge #180 followed by graveside military rites by Assumption VFW Tacusah Post #6577.
